Red JunglefowlGallus gallus
- ORDER: Galliformes
- FAMILY: Phasianidae
Basic Description
The Red Junglefowl is a spectacular bird with reddish, golden, and iridescent green and blue plumes. If this showy tropical species also looks strangely familiar, that's because this is the original source of the domestic chicken. Wild Red Junglefowl are shy, secretive birds most at home in forests of South and Southeast Asia. Wild descendants of domesticated junglefowl have been introduced widely and often occur around humans on islands in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, including the Hawaiian Islands.
