Calls

Both sexes vocalize frequently at nesting colonies but are generally quiet at sea. Males have slightly higher pitched calls than females—a difference that might help birds distinguish between sexes at breeding colonies at night. One common call type, given in flight, on the ground, and in nesting burrows, is a short outburst of chuckling calls, with each series lasting about a second. Birds appear to use this call to attract and recognize mates and to defend their nest. Another common call consists of rapid, slightly ascending chatter that is interrupted every few seconds by a nasally, ascending “were?” Birds typically deliver these endless “purring” sequences in nesting burrows, often as part of a duet with their mate. This call appears to be important for selecting mates and then forming and maintaining pair bonds.
