Songs

The song is a series of burry but ethereal-sounding, flutelike notes, with the middle phrase high-pitched and rising, the last phrase lower and descending in pitch (unlike in Bicknell’s Thrush song, in which it rises). This ending is usually consistent, but the first part of the song can vary a lot between individuals.

Calls

The most commonly heard call of Gray-cheeked Thrush is a high-pitched queer, vreer, or wheerrr. This call is similar to calls of other Catharus thrushes (such as Veery), so listening to audio recordings can be very useful for learning to identify this and related species.

Other Sounds

When Gray-cheeked Thrush quivers the foot (as aggressive display, or when foraging), the sound is audible if made in dry leaf litter, sounding like a dry rattling. A male attacking a rival in flight sometimes produces a tremulous whistling sound (winnowing) with the wings.
